What is keyword density and how to calculate it

author Posted by: matthew on date Sep 1st, 2008 | filed Filed under: SEO, keyword

One component of search engine optimization is working with keyword density. You have to write articles that have keyword density of 3-5% in order for the search engines to pick it up.

But what does keyword density mean?

In normal context, density refers to the amount of matter per volume. Keyword density in search engine optimization refers to how often a keyword or keyword phrase appears in the article or blog. The volume here refers to the number of words and this includes the html code. As a guideline, you can add in an additional 30% of words that is due to code. By dividing the number of times the keyword appears with the total number of words and you get the keyword density

Hence to determine the keyword density, first you have to copy the article with its html code and paste it on a Microsoft word. Then activate the word count function within (You can simply highlight the entire passage and look on the bottom left for the number of words.

After which you have to count the number of times the keyword or keyword phrase appears by using he CTRL F and scroll through the number of times that the keyword appears.

Divide the number of times the keyword appears by the total number of words and what you have is the keyword density. You should have 3-5 articles aiming for the same keyword with various density as the algorthem of the various search engines are different and you have a better chances of making it to listing in each of the engines by having articles with different keyword density

I am going crazy! As i explore internet marketing, the whole process is so tedious. As i make more profit from the net i am going to invest more into the various tools. Keyword research tools is one area i am going to put some money into!

Today i have spend roughly the whole day research a few segments that i am interested to exploring. First the general keywords. Then i segment out to the various categories and then i analysis the figures further. Trying to find a segment that is not so competitive. The i have to spend time to draft out a whole posting or articles to put this keyword research results into practice!

You can imagine the amount of time that i have to invest in. May be i should explore the various tools available in the market.

How to get the search engines to index you and hopefully get a higher ranking.

Right now, as i am still learning about how to go about doing my affiliates marketing, i am thinking about the indexing of my website by the search engines. Is there a more effective way of getting the bots to index my website and hopefully to obtain a higher ranking later. Suddenly, i have this idea of using blogger.

Theoretically speaking, Blogger is owned by Google. Hence, Google should be actively indexing its own blog directory at Blogger. May be if i set up a Blogger account, blog a bit and link it back to my own website, i should be able to be indexed by Google.  And then the whole SEO or search engine optimisation should kicks in.

Thats the theory. Right now i have 2 website that i be pushing out for affiliates markeing. Lets try to submit one for indexing through the manual submission and the other website by Blogger route.

Next time, i would try using Ezinearticles to do a link back and see if my website be indexed by the engine through EzineArticles.

Free & useful SEO toolbar

Just wondering how many of you understand whats the purpose of installing a SEO toolbar on your browser. Maybe for the easy search function? Why do these guys offer free stuff? Whats the catch?

There are 3 toolbars that i have installed on my browser:

Google toolbar

Alexa tool bar

SEOBook toolbar

Whats the use of these toolbars? Mainly i used it when i am studying which keywords to fight for?

For example i am interested in the dating scene. I have done my keyword search result searches and i used the results on google search engine to evaluate the competition. And this is when these 3 toolbars are useful.

Google toolbar is useful because it gives the Google Pagerank. Mainly because Google is such a powerful search engine now, so i need to have some indications on how google views it. But be warned that the page rank currently only gives a rough indication how google views you. Relevancy of your website to the subject is more important now.

Alexa toolbar gives you an indication of the traffic that the website is getting. Currently, Google Pageranks just gives you a rough feel of how is the website but it is no longer the deciding factor in how high the ranking Google would put you when it index you page. But Alexa measures the traffic that is flowing to your website and is a better indication of how strong is your competition.

The third tool that i have installed is the SEOBoook toolbar. It is useful as it complements the other two bars by providing additional information. For instance, after you have installed the SEOBook on your Firefox ( things to take note is that this toolbar can only works with Firefox browser.) and you turn it on. When you google for a keyword, it gives you information like how long is the website around, whats the yahoo ranking and links and many other information. In a nutshell, it simply gives you all the information you need to study your competition on the search engine results. In a way, you do not have to install Google toolbar if you have the SEOBook toolbar as it gives Google Pagerank

Enjoy! try them!

And need i mention that its all free tools? It can better help you with your search engine optimization.
